How to read the columns
Runs saved on defense says, in runs, how much a club held its runs down compared with the average of the same league. The three columns of the split (balls turned into outs, errors, catcher) add up to that figure.
Errors count only what was recorded as one, and a ball never reached is not in the figure. Fielding percentage is the share of chances that did not become an error, and clubs face a different number of chances, so the same error total can still give a different percentage. The same table by league is on Central League fielding and Pacific League fielding.
Fielding once the season is over
Once every game of the year has been played, the figures here become the settled ones for that season. Both the order and the numbers stay as they are until the next season starts, so the page works as a starting point for comparing how clubs defend from one year to the next.
