How to read the ratings

S A B C D E F G S goes only to a player who stands far apart within the same role in this season's rating, so some seasons have none. For this season's rating, S is the top and G the lowest; within a letter, + ranks above −. Players with little playing time show —

  • Batter ratings look at batting only (including stolen bases), and pitcher ratings look at pitching only; fielding is not counted
  • Ratings place this season's top-team performance relative to the whole league, from A (upper) to G (lower). An S appears only in the rating for this season, and only for a player whose numbers sit far above the average within the same group (batters, starters or relievers) and whose playing time has reached at least half of the qualifying line for the games played so far, so some seasons have none. They summarise where the numbers sit; they do not measure a player's worth. The rating for this season is a running total that grows with playing time, so players who appear less often are less likely to come out near the top. For batters, the recent-seasons column is read as performance per appearance.
  • Ratings appear once a player reaches 100 plate appearances (30 innings pitched for pitchers). Soon after opening day many players show a dash. Injury information is not used.
  • This is an estimate from the last 3 seasons, with the more recent seasons counting for more. Seasons with little playing time count for less.
  • Development-contract players and players with few appearances show a dash instead of a rating.
  • For players who changed clubs during the season, the statistics shown are those with this club. The last 3 seasons add together spells with different clubs in the same league.
