Plate Appearance

Overview

A plate appearance counts every completed turn at bat regardless of outcome: hits, outs, walks, hit-by-pitches, sacrifices, sacrifice flies, and interference. While at bats exclude certain outcomes for batting average calculation, plate appearances encompass all batting opportunities. NPB's qualifying threshold is team games multiplied by 3.1, yielding 443 plate appearances in a 143-game season. On-base percentage and most sabermetric indicators use plate appearances as their base, making them more comprehensive than at bats for measuring overall offensive contribution. A pinch-hit appearance counts equally with a starting lineup appearance, accurately reflecting total playing opportunity.
