Bullpen

Overview

The bullpen is where relief pitchers wait and warm up during games, and the term also broadly refers to the entire relief pitching corps. In NPB stadiums, bullpens are located beyond foul territory or under the stands-some, like Koshien Stadium, are visible at ground level, while others are fully enclosed indoor facilities. In modern baseball, bullpen depth is a decisive factor in team success. The 2005 Hanshin Tigers exemplified this with their dominant 'JFK' trio of Kyuji Fujikawa, Jeff Williams, and Tomoyuki Kubota, demonstrating how establishing a reliable late-inning pattern is key to winning championships. A 'bullpen day' refers to the strategy of using only relievers without a traditional starter, typically employed during rotation gaps or during extended stretches of consecutive games. Bullpen catchers, though rarely in the spotlight, play a vital role by sensing pitchers' conditions up close and relaying information to the bench. In recent years, pitch count management in the bullpen has become stricter to reduce arm and elbow strain on relievers.
