Protected List

Overview

The protected list is the 28-player roster designated by the acquiring club in NPB's FA player compensation system. Players not included on this list are eligible to be claimed by the departing FA player's former club. Constructing the protected list forces agonizing decisions on the front office. With up to 70 players on the active roster but only 28 protection slots, roughly 40 players remain exposed. Core contributors are obvious inclusions, but prioritizing among promising prospects, proven veterans, and role specialists requires difficult trade-offs. The contents of the protected list are confidential; outsiders cannot know which players are protected. However, fans actively speculate about each club's protection strategy based on the identities of players acquired through compensation. Whether the 28-player limit is appropriate remains a perennial debate, with advocates for expansion arguing it is too restrictive and defenders of the current number maintaining it is necessary to preserve the compensation system's effectiveness.
