Overview
Player compensation is a system within NPB's free agency framework that requires the club acquiring an FA player to transfer an unprotected player to the departing player's former club. It serves as a competitive-balance mechanism, providing partial restitution for the loss of a key contributor. The process begins with the acquiring club submitting a 28-player protected list to the former club, which then has the right to select one unprotected player. Constructing the protected list forces agonizing decisions: with only 28 slots, promising young players or proven veterans inevitably fall outside the protection, creating the risk of unexpected talent loss. Players acquired through compensation not infrequently thrive with their new teams. Cases like Tetsuya Utsumi, who moved from the Giants to DeNA via compensation and built a new chapter in his career, illustrate the system's potential to reshape rosters in unexpected ways. Player compensation is a critical pillar of FA fairness, but the number of protected slots and the scope of compensation are subjects of ongoing debate, with periodic reviews of the system's structure.
