Triple Crown

Overview

The Triple Crown is awarded to a batter who leads the league simultaneously in batting average, home runs, and RBI-considered the pinnacle of hitting achievement. It has been accomplished 12 times in NPB history, with Hiromitsu Ochiai (Lotte, Chunichi) being the only player to achieve it three times (1982, 1985, 1986). Sadaharu Oh won it twice, and Katsuya Nomura earned it in 1965. After Nobuhiko Matsunaka (Daiei) in 2004, no one achieved the feat until Munetaka Murakami (Yakult) won the first Reiwa-era Triple Crown in 2022 with 56 home runs, a .318 average, and 134 RBI-becoming the youngest winner at age 22. The Triple Crown is so difficult because swinging for home runs often conflicts with maintaining a high average, and RBI depend heavily on teammates reaching base. Achieving the top mark in all three categories simultaneously requires not only elite individual talent but also favorable lineup positioning.
