How to read this table
Each row is one club. The payroll is the figure published before the season, from which the amount per win / hit / home run / stolen base / run / strikeout is derived. Where the count in the denominator is zero the cell reads as a dash. During the season the payroll is prorated to the games played before dividing.
Whether a figure is large or small depends on squad-building policy, the size of the home market, the years left on multi-year deals, promotions from the developmental squad and much else. This table does not explain any of that; it simply lays out the division of published totals by official results.
Frequently asked questions
Are these figures individual salaries?
No. They are the payroll published for the club as a whole, divided by that club's counts. They do not show what any individual receives.
What does the payroll cover?
It is the published sum of the salaries of registered players as of the start of the season, before tax. Foreign players, developmental players and in-season moves are not included. Bonuses and the structure of multi-year deals are not included either.
