Salary Arbitration

Overview

Salary arbitration in NPB allows players to appeal to a commissioner-appointed arbitration panel when contract renewal negotiations fail. Both sides submit salary figures, and the panel selects one amount in a final-offer format. NPB arbitration filings are rare, with most disputes resolved through negotiation. Cases typically attract attention when star players contest significant pay cuts. MLB's arbitration system is more structured, granting eligibility to players with 3 to 6 years of service time. NPB's system sees lower utilization, reflecting relatively weaker player bargaining power.
