Slider

Overview

The slider breaks laterally away from the pitcher's throwing arm, faster than a curveball and with late, sharp movement off a fastball-like trajectory. In NPB, Tomohito Ito's legendary high-speed slider in 1993 helped him post a 0.91 ERA as a rookie for Yakult. Daisuke Miura built a 172-win career with the Yokohama BayStars using the slider as his primary weapon. Yu Darvish distinguished between vertical and horizontal sliders, generating strikeouts prolifically in both NPB and MLB. With the advent of Trackman pitch-tracking technology, sliders are now subcategorized into sweepers (large horizontal break) and gyro sliders (vertical drop). The pitch's high whiff rate makes it one of the most trusted strikeout pitches in modern baseball.
