The foreign player quota limits the number of non-Japanese players each NPB club may field simultaneously in official first-team games. The limit was expanded in the 2020 season from four to five: up to five foreign players may be on the active roster, with up to four on the bench for any given game. Within the registered five, no more than four may be pitchers and no more than four may be position players at the same time (as stipulated for the 2023 season). The restriction aims to balance the utilization of foreign talent with the preservation of playing opportunities for Japanese players. The history of the foreign player quota mirrors NPB's internationalization. Foreign players - traditionally called 'suketto gaijin' (helper foreigners) - have long come to Japan, primarily from MLB or Latin America, to anchor batting lineups or bolster pitching rotations.
