Golden Glove Award

Overview

The Golden Glove Award, established in 1972 as the Mitsui Golden Glove Award, honors the best defensive player at each position (pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and three outfielders) in both the Central and Pacific Leagues. Selected by media vote from newspaper and television reporters, the award considers fielding percentage, error counts, and assists alongside memorable defensive plays. Notable record holders include pitcher Masumi Kuwata (8 awards), outfielder Ichiro Suzuki (7 awards), and catcher Atsuya Furuta with a dominant 10 awards. In recent years, sabermetric defensive metrics like UZR and DRS have highlighted discrepancies between voting results and objective data. Critics note that outfield selections sometimes favor name recognition over actual defensive range. Nevertheless, the Golden Glove remains NPB's highest defensive honor, motivating players to excel in the field and promoting the importance of defense to fans.
