Frequently asked questions

How are the ranks and compensation decided?

Under the rules, within each club's payroll (foreign players excluded), places 1 to 3 are rank A, 4 to 10 rank B and 11 and below rank C; a club signing a first-time rank A player pays the old club 80% of his salary, or 50% plus one player; rank B is 60%, or 40% plus one player; rank C needs no compensation (FA Regulations, Article 10). The ranks on this page are estimated from performance-based salary estimates instead of actual salaries. How the rights are earned is explained under free agency.
