Uniform Number

Overview

Uniform numbers identify players on the field, but in NPB they carry deep cultural significance beyond mere identification. Number 18 is the ace's number, 3 and 4 belong to power hitters, and 27 is traditionally a catcher's number, reflecting strong associations between numbers and roles. The retired number system permanently removes numbers honoring legendary players; famous examples include Shigeo Nagashima's 3 and Sadaharu Oh's 1, both with the Yomiuri. Some players choose unconventional numbers like 0 or 00, expressing individuality. Rookies typically receive high numbers and earn lower ones through performance, making a player's number history a mirror of their career trajectory.
