The battery refers to the pitcher-catcher pairing, a term derived from the military meaning of 'battery' (an artillery unit) - the pitcher as the cannon and the catcher as the platform. Battery coordination is the cornerstone of baseball defense; no matter how dominant a pitcher's stuff may be, it cannot reach its potential without a catcher who receives effectively and calls the right game. Communication between battery mates occurs through sign exchanges: the catcher signals the pitch type and location, and the pitcher either agrees or shakes off to request a different offering. This pitch-by-pitch dialogue constitutes the sequencing strategy that shapes the confrontation with each batter. NPB has a strong tradition of venerating the ace-and-starting-catcher combination.
