Tag Up

Overview

Tag up allows a runner to advance after retouching their base once a fly ball is caught. Tagging up from third base-recorded as a sacrifice fly-directly produces runs and often decides close games. The outcome hinges on the outfielder's arm strength and throwing accuracy versus the runner's jump timing. Teams with strong-armed outfielders like Ichiro (Orix) or Tsuyoshi Shinjo (Hanshin, Nippon-Ham), known for laser-beam throws, force third-base coaches into cautious decisions. Conversely, aggressive runners can score even on shallow flies. In NPB, sacrifice flies account for roughly 5-8% of a team's seasonal RBI, making tag-ups a quiet but reliable run-producing tactic. Runners on first or second may also tag up to advance into scoring position, adding strategic depth to this fundamental baserunning skill.
