Slugging Percentage

Overview

Slugging percentage is calculated by dividing total bases (single=1, double=2, triple=3, home run=4) by at-bats. Unlike batting average, it rewards extra-base hits, so power hitters record higher figures. The NPB single-season record is .779, set by Wladimir Balentien (Yakult) when he hit 60 home runs in 2013. Among Japanese players, Munetaka Murakami posted .710 in 2022. Generally, .500 or above is considered excellent while the low .400s represent the league average. Despite containing 'percentage' in its name, it can theoretically reach 4.000 (if every at-bat were a home run). Combined with on-base percentage to form OPS, it serves as a widely used shorthand for overall offensive production and is often the first sabermetric concept newcomers encounter. Hitters with high slugging percentages are typically placed in the cleanup spot due to their ability to drive in runs with extra-base hits.
