Extra-inning rules by game type (as of 2026)
| Game | Extra innings | If still tied |
|---|---|---|
| Regular season, both leagues (incl. interleague) | Up to the 12th | Draw (no replay) |
| Climax Series | Up to the 12th | Draw; a game can also be called mid-inning once the stage winner is decided |
| Japan Series (Games 1-7) | Up to the 12th | Draw (series moves to Game 8 if neither team reaches 4 wins) |
| Japan Series (Game 8 onward) | Unlimited | Played until decided |
In the Climax Series, if the teams are level on wins excluding draws, the higher-ranked club advances, so draws effectively favor the higher seed. See "NPB's globally unusual tie-game system" for the impact on standings.
How the rule has changed (2011 onward)
| Period | Extra innings | Background |
|---|---|---|
| 2011-2012 | Up to the 12th, and no new extra inning after 3 hours 30 minutes of play | Power-saving measures after the Great East Japan Earthquake |
| 2013-2019 | Up to the 12th (no time limit) | The 3.5-hour rule was abolished |
| 2020 | Up to the 10th | COVID-19 special measure |
| 2021 | No extra innings (games ended after the 9th) | COVID-19 special measure |
| 2022 onward | Up to the 12th (no time limit) | Return to the standard rule after three years |
Earlier eras saw unlimited extra innings, time limits, and a 15-inning cap at various points. The full history is covered in "the evolution of NPB's tie-game rules".
No tiebreaker rule
As of July 2026, NPB regular-season games do not use a tiebreaker (starting extra innings with runners on base), and the 2026 playing-rule amendments include no changes related to extra innings. The format is used in international events such as the WBC, and its adoption in NPB is debated from time to time. For marathon games that stayed unresolved, see "the longest extra-inning games".
Frequently asked questions
How many extra innings are played in the Central League?
Up to the 12th inning. The Pacific League is the same: if the game is tied after the 12th, it ends in a draw (2026 season).
Does NPB use a tiebreaker in extra innings?
No (as of July 2026). Extra innings are played normally through the 12th, and unresolved games end in a draw. Tiebreakers are used in international events such as the WBC.
How many extra innings are allowed in the Japan Series?
Through Game 7, up to the 12th inning (a tie stands as a draw). From Game 8 onward there is no inning limit and play continues until decided (per the 2025 series regulations).
How do draws affect the standings?
NPB standings are based on winning percentage (wins divided by wins plus losses), and draws are excluded from the calculation. Teams with many draws have a smaller denominator, which can swing their percentage more.
