Quick Pitch / Slide Step

Overview

The quick motion (slide step) is a pitcher's technique for delivering rapidly from the set position with runners on base. Instead of a full leg kick, the pitcher minimizes leg lift to shorten the time from set to release. Typical quick times range from 1.2 to 1.4 seconds; combined with a catcher's pop time of 1.8 to 2.0 seconds, a total under 3.3 seconds can shut down virtually all base stealers. The challenge is that altered mechanics may reduce velocity and command. Pitchers who maintain full stuff while pitching from the quick are highly valued.
