Overview
Mascots are costumed characters embodying a club's identity, serving multifaceted roles: pre-game and between-inning entertainment, fan interaction, and merchandise branding. NPB clubs began formally introducing mascots in the 1980s, and all 12 teams now maintain official mascot characters. Notable examples include the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks' Harry Hawk, the Tokyo Yakult Swallows' Tsubakurou (famous for his sharp-tongued persona on social media), and the Chiba Lotte Marines' Nazo no Sakana. Tsubakurou in particular has transcended the mascot role to become a cultural phenomenon. Mascots contribute significantly to club revenue through character merchandise sales, which constitute a substantial portion of retail income. They also serve as community ambassadors through school visits and regional outreach programs, bridging clubs and local communities. Recent trends include inter-mascot social media interactions and cross-team collaboration events, expanding the entertainment dimension of NPB fandom.
