Farewell Game

Overview

A farewell game is a specially arranged occasion within the regular season where a club honors a retiring player who has made significant long-term contributions, giving them a final at-bat or final pitch. This tradition is unique to Japanese professional baseball; MLB has no equivalent institution. Farewell games create a distinctive atmosphere in which the entire stadium - including the opposing team - celebrates the retiring player. An unwritten code sometimes sees opposing pitchers groove pitches to a retiring batter or opposing hitters swing and miss against a retiring pitcher, an exceptional departure from competitive norms accepted as a form of baseball aesthetics. Post-game ceremonies feature the player addressing fans and staff with words of gratitude, followed by a 'last run' lap around the field. Shigeo Nagashima's iconic farewell declaration - 'Our Giants are forever immortal' (1974) - Sachio Kinugasa's retirement ceremony, and Ichiro's farewell game at Tokyo Dome (2019) are among the most memorable moments in NPB history. However, farewell games are reserved for a select few who have served their clubs with distinction; the majority of players retire quietly without such honors, a disparity that reflects the unforgiving nature of professional sports.
