Overview
An ejection is a disciplinary action in which the umpire orders a player, manager, or coach to leave the game immediately, including the dugout and all playing areas. Common causes include dangerous pitches (throws near a batter's head), abusive or insulting behavior toward umpires, excessive arguing over calls, and participation in brawls. NPB enforces strict rules on dangerous pitches: when a pitch strikes a batter near the head, the pitcher is ejected immediately regardless of intent. This regulation prioritizes player safety above all else. Managerial ejections most often result from escalating arguments over calls. Senichi Hoshino was famous during his managing career for fiery confrontations with umpires and accumulated a notable ejection count. While a manager's ejection disrupts the chain of command, it is sometimes credited with galvanizing the team. Ejected individuals may face additional sanctions from the Commissioner's office, including suspensions and fines. Ejection decisions rest with the umpire's discretion, and the consistency of enforcement standards is a perennial topic of debate.
