Baseball Gambling

Overview

Baseball gambling refers to wagering on the outcomes of professional baseball games or individual plays. In Japan, gambling is prohibited under criminal law (with exceptions for publicly sanctioned forms), and player involvement in baseball gambling violates both the law and NPB regulations. The primary concern with baseball gambling is its potential link to match fixing. Gambling organizations may approach players, offering financial incentives to manipulate game outcomes. NPB therefore mandates anti-gambling education for all players and requires reporting of suspicious contacts. The 2015-2016 gambling scandal involving Giants players sent shockwaves through NPB. Multiple players were found to have participated in baseball gambling, resulting in suspension penalties. While the case did not involve match fixing per se, it reignited concerns about the intersection of gambling and baseball, forcing NPB to strengthen its compliance framework. As sports betting legalization advances globally, the discussion has begun in Japan as well. Proponents argue legalization would improve transparency and monitoring, while opponents worry about increased temptation for players. The debate demands careful deliberation.
