OPS (On-base Plus Slugging)

Overview

OPS is simply the sum of on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Despite its simplicity, it correlates strongly with run production and has become widely adopted for evaluating overall offensive ability. In NPB, .800+ is considered good, .900+ excellent, and 1.000+ MVP-caliber. Wladimir Balentien (Yakult) posted a 1.234 OPS in 2013, one of the highest single-season marks in NPB history, complementing his record 60 home runs. Career leaders include Sadaharu Oh at 1.080 and Hiromitsu Ochiai at 1.003, demonstrating that elite power hitters consistently produce exceptional OPS figures. However, OPS has a theoretical limitation in weighting OBP and SLG equally, when research shows OBP is approximately 1.7 times more valuable for run creation. This shortcoming motivated the development of the more precise wOBA metric, which assigns proper linear weights to each offensive event.
