Overview
A pickoff is a throw by the pitcher to a base occupied by a runner, serving dual purposes: retiring the runner (pickoff out) and limiting lead distance to deter stolen bases. Pickoff skill varies significantly among pitchers, with left-handers' first-base moves being particularly effective since runners struggle to read their delivery. In NPB, pickoff proficiency is valued as an added dimension of left-handed pitching. Rules require pitchers to step clearly toward the base when throwing from the rubber; insufficient movement results in a balk call. MLB's 2023 pickoff limit (two attempts per plate appearance, with a third requiring success or resulting in a balk) boosted stolen base rates, but NPB has not adopted a similar restriction. Beyond runner deterrence, pickoffs disrupt batter timing and allow defensive repositioning, making them a versatile tactical weapon in a pitcher's arsenal.
