Farm Team (Minor League)

Overview

The farm team (ni-gun, or second team) is the minor-league organization maintained by each NPB club, competing in either the Eastern League (six eastern clubs) or the Western League (six western clubs). The farm system's primary functions are developing young players, providing adjustment opportunities for players sent down from the first team, and facilitating rehabilitation for injured players. The farm is an indispensable talent pipeline for the first team. Most drafted rookies begin in the farm, gaining competitive experience and refining their skills before earning a promotion. With the expansion of the development player system, farm rosters have grown, and some clubs have established third teams to strengthen their development infrastructure. The SoftBank Hawks' three-tier system, which provides more players with game action, has drawn attention as a progressive model. Farm games attract smaller crowds and less media coverage than first-team contests. However, countless examples demonstrate that diligent work in the farm leads to first-team success, and investing in farm facilities directly impacts a club's long-term competitiveness. An increasing number of clubs now stream farm games online, making it easier for fans to follow prospects' development.
