Tanaka Undefeated Season
In 2013, Masahiro Tanaka of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 28 starts, recording 183 strikeouts and a 0.94 WHIP, including a record 28 consecutive wins. Tanaka's 2013 season produced 24-0 with 1.27 ERA in 28 games - NPB's greatest single season. His undefeated regular season was unprecedented, leading the league in both wins and ERA.
Recovery from 2011 Earthquake
Rakuten rise coincided with recovery from the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Based in devastated Sendai, the team rallied under manager Senichi Hoshino, winning their first pennant in their 9th year.
Japan Series Battle
Facing the Yomiuri, the series went to Game 7. Tanaka, who had thrown 160 pitches in a complete game the day before, came in as reliever in the 9th to close out Rakuten first-ever championship. The Japan Series against the Yomiuri went to 7 games. After losing Game 6, Tanaka relieved in Game 7 on one day's rest, taking the mound despite throwing 160 pitches two days prior. This moment became NPB legend.
Tanaka to MLB
Tanaka signed with the Yankees for 7 years and $155 million. His 24-0 season remains the most perfect in NPB history, and Rakuten championship symbolizes Tohoku recovery. That offseason, Tanaka posted to the Yankees for approximately 2 billion yen, signing a 7-year $155 million deal. Despite losing Tanaka, Rakuten's 2013 championship endures as a Tohoku recovery symbol.
The Road from Inaugural Season
The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles were born from the 2004 restructuring of NPB triggered by the Orix-Kintetsu merger. In their inaugural 2005 season, they posted a dismal 38-97-1 record, making their lack of talent painfully clear. For years afterward the team languished near the bottom of the Pacific League standings, unable to contend for a pennant. Reaching the Japan Series championship in just their ninth year of existence was therefore extraordinary, representing one of the fastest ascents by any expansion franchise in NPB history. Their triumph validated the restructuring that had brought the club into being.
Manager Hoshino's Decisive Leadership
Senichi Hoshino was a renowned manager who had led both Chunichi and Hanshin to league titles before taking charge of Rakuten in 2011. From the outset he declared his intent to deliver a championship to the Tohoku region, instilling a fighting spirit throughout the roster. He built a pitching-centric strategy with Masahiro Tanaka as the ace while strengthening the bullpen. His decision to deploy Tanaka in relief in Game 7 of the Japan Series, just one day after the pitcher threw 160 pitches in a complete-game effort, epitomized his relentless pursuit of victory. It remains one of the most talked-about managerial decisions in NPB history.
Lasting Significance for Baseball and Society
Rakuten's 2013 championship demonstrated the social power of sport. Just two and a half years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, a team based in the disaster-stricken region reached the summit of professional baseball, serving as a symbol of recovery visible both domestically and abroad. An estimated 210,000 people lined the streets of Sendai for the victory parade, as the entire region celebrated. In NPB history, few expansion clubs have achieved a title in such dramatic fashion, and combined with Tanaka's undefeated season, 2013 remains one of the most storied campaigns in the annals of Japanese baseball.
