Sabermetrics

Overview

Sabermetrics is an analytical framework that quantifies player contributions through statistical methods, capturing value that traditional metrics like batting average and RBI miss. Pioneered by Bill James in the 1970s, it gained mainstream recognition through the Oakland Athletics' Moneyball strategy in the 2000s. Key metrics include OPS, WAR, FIP, and wOBA. NPB adoption accelerated in the 2010s with teams establishing dedicated analytics departments. However, areas like defensive evaluation and clutch performance remain difficult to measure precisely, making hybrid approaches combining sabermetrics with traditional scouting the practical standard.
