Overview
Defensive range refers to the spatial area a fielder can cover to field batted balls, making it one of the most critical factors in evaluating defensive ability. A player with exceptional range converts batted balls that other fielders cannot reach into outs, significantly reducing team runs allowed. Range is determined by a combination of foot speed, reaction time, read accuracy on batted balls, and positioning skill. Speed alone does not guarantee range; the ability to instantly judge a ball's direction and velocity and take the optimal pursuit route is essential. Historically, range evaluation relied heavily on subjective impressions. However, advanced defensive metrics such as UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) and DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) now enable quantification. These metrics statistically analyze how many batted balls in each zone a fielder converts to outs compared to the league average, calculating defensive contribution in runs. NPB's adoption of tracking data is advancing objective range evaluation. A shortstop or center fielder with elite range can dramatically elevate a team's defense, and their value may exceed that of their offensive production.
