Tracking Data

Overview

Tracking data refers to measurements captured by high-precision systems such as TrackMan, Hawk-Eye, and Rapsodo, recording pitch and batted-ball trajectory, velocity, spin rate, spin axis, launch angle, and exit velocity. NPB began adopting TrackMan around 2014, with systems now installed at all 12 home stadiums. This data has quantified previously subjective concepts like 'rising fastball' and 'sharp breaking ball' into spin rate and spin efficiency metrics. Tracking data underpins modern team strategy, from pitch design and swing optimization to defensive shift placement. However, interpreting the data requires specialized expertise, driving rapid growth in demand for baseball data analysts.
