Spin Rate

Overview

Spin rate measures pitch rotation in revolutions per minute (rpm), precisely captured by tracking systems like Trackman. For fastballs, higher spin rate increases backspin-generated lift, creating the perceived rising effect hitters describe as carry. MLB average fastball spin rate is approximately 2,250 rpm, with 2,500-plus rpm considered high-spin. However, spin axis direction matters equally: purer backspin generates greater lift. For breaking balls, the combination of spin rate and axis determines movement magnitude, enabling objective evaluation of slider and curveball sharpness.
