Overview
The pitching rotation is the system by which starting pitchers take turns on the mound at regular intervals. NPB predominantly uses a six-man rotation with six days between starts, allowing weekly appearances. Compared to MLB's five-man rotation on four days' rest, NPB starters pitch less frequently but are often permitted higher pitch counts per outing. Rotation stability is considered essential for championship contention, though it is rare for all six starters to reach the innings-pitched qualifying threshold. Injuries and slumps necessitate rotation shuffles throughout the season, often giving young pitchers called up from the farm their opportunity. Interleague play and consecutive game schedules can disrupt rotations, testing a manager's pitching management skills.
