Games Behind

Overview

Games behind quantifies the gap between a team and the first-place team, calculated as (leader's wins above .500 minus team's wins above .500) divided by two. It fluctuates in half-game increments: a leader win or team loss adds 0.5, while the reverse subtracts 0.5. NPB standings always display games behind alongside winning percentage, providing an intuitive snapshot of the pennant race. In NPB, where ties are common, winning percentage and games behind can occasionally conflict; a team second in winning percentage may be closer to first in games behind than the third-place team. Zero games behind indicates a tie for first, with tiebreakers such as head-to-head record determining the final order.
