12 Years of Darkness
From 2008-2019, Orix finished in the bottom half 10 times. After the 2004 Kintetsu merger, the team lacked cohesion. Kyocera Dome attendance fell below 15,000 per game. They finished last in 2019 at 61-75.
Manager Nakajima and Youth
Satoshi Nakajima became manager in 2021, promoting young talent. The pitching trio of Yamamoto, Miyagi, and Yamasaki emerged. Masataka Yoshida won the batting title at .339, and Yutaro Sugimoto hit 32 HR for the HR title. Orix won their first pennant in 25 years.
2022-2023 Titles
Orix repeated in 2022, winning the Japan Series over Yakult 4-2 with Yamamoto as MVP. They three-peated in 2023, losing the Japan Series to Hanshin in the Kansai Derby 3-4, but three straight pennants proved their revival.
Revival Analysis
Orix revival was built on drafting and development. Yamamoto (4th round), Miyagi (1st), and Yamasaki (4th) were all homegrown. After Yoshida left for the Red Sox, Yuma Tongu won the batting title, showing roster depth that sustained the three-peat.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto: The Indispensable Ace
At the heart of Orix's three-peat stood Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He posted a 1.69 ERA in 2021 and 1.68 in 2022, winning consecutive Sawamura Awards. His ability to dominate games as a complete-game pitcher set him apart. Consistently touching the upper 150s km/h on his fastball, with elite command of his cutter and curveball, Yamamoto maintained a sub-2.00 ERA across the entire three-year run. Manager Nakajima could plan around Yamamoto starts as near-certain victories. This ace served as the spiritual pillar of the entire pitching staff, providing a positive influence on younger arms throughout the dynasty.
Kyocera Dome Fever and Attendance Recovery
Orix's revival extended beyond the standings to a dramatic attendance recovery. Kyocera Dome Osaka, which had averaged below 20,000 per game during the 2019 downturn, saw sellouts become frequent by 2023. Games billed as Yamamoto Day sold out immediately, with fans spilling outside the venue. Merchandise sales, long stagnant, surged as the revenue structure improved markedly. The attendance growth was most pronounced among younger demographics, with a new generation of fans who joined during the three-peat era. Community engagement programs and enhanced fan services also contributed to bringing fans back to a franchise that had struggled with empty seats for over a decade.
Challenges After the Three-Peat
When Yoshinobu Yamamoto departed for the Los Angeles Dodgers after the 2023 season, Orix lost its central pillar. Following Masataka Yoshida's earlier move to Boston, the departure marked a clear turning point for the core that sustained the three-peat. Yet the development infrastructure and winning culture built since 2021 remained intact. Daiya Miyagi emerged as the new ace candidate, while Soichiro Yamasaki explored a transition from relief to the rotation. In the lineup, Yuma Tongu claimed a batting title and Kotaro Kurebayashi established himself at shortstop, signaling that the next generation was ready. The true test for the franchise lies in maintaining the winning culture through this transition and connecting it to the next competitive cycle.
