Triple

Overview

A triple is recorded when the batter reaches third base on a hit without the ball leaving the field. Unlike home runs, triples depend on a combination of hit direction, outfield positioning, ballpark dimensions, and the batter's speed. In NPB, triples occur more frequently in spacious parks like Koshien and Sapporo Dome, skewing toward fast runners. Yutaka Fukumoto holds the NPB career record with 115 triples. The triple is the rarest type of hit and is often called the most exciting play in baseball. A batter sprinting full speed into a slide at third electrifies the crowd and can shift game momentum. In recent years, smaller ballparks and defensive shifting have contributed to a declining frequency of triples.
