Overview
Platooning is a lineup strategy that alternates players at the same defensive position based on the opposing starting pitcher's handedness. Statistically, batters perform better against opposite-handed pitchers (right-handed batters hit better against lefties and vice versa). By exploiting this split, managers optimize lineup expected batting averages. Platoons are most common at positions with lighter defensive demands: outfield corners, first base, and designated hitter. Benefits include lineup optimization and fatigue management through distributed playing time. Drawbacks include vulnerability to mid-game pitching changes that flip the handedness advantage, and difficulty for players to establish rhythm without regular starts. NPB has seen increased platoon usage in recent years as data analytics adoption grows, particularly among Pacific League clubs.
