Fly Out

Overview

A fly out is recorded when a fielder catches a batted ball in the air, whether in fair or foul territory. This includes infield flies, outfield flies, and caught line drives. Batters with a high fly ball rate (FB%) have home run potential but also tend toward lower batting averages due to more routine fly outs. Fly ball pitchers face higher home run risk but benefit from more certain outs compared to ground balls outside of double plays. The sacrifice fly is a special type of fly out where a runner on third tags up and scores on an outfield fly, crediting the batter with an RBI.
