WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched)

Overview

WHIP is calculated as (Walks + Hits) / Innings Pitched. It indicates how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning, measuring consistency. Below 1.00 is excellent, and 1.20 or less is considered good. Unlike ERA, it doesn't involve the concept of earned runs, allowing distinction between pitchers who allow runners but avoid scoring and those who simply prevent baserunners.
