Overview
Pitching form encompasses the full sequence of body movements during pitch delivery: the windup, stride, arm action, release point, and follow-through. Form directly determines velocity, command, pitch quality, and injury risk, making its optimization a lifelong pursuit for every pitcher. Pitching forms are broadly categorized as overhand, three-quarter, sidearm, and submarine. Overhand and three-quarter deliveries dominate NPB, but sidearm and submarine pitchers are valued as relief specialists whose unconventional angles create deceptive movement unfamiliar to hitters. Advances in biomechanics have dramatically enhanced scientific analysis of pitching form. Motion capture and high-speed cameras measure joint angles and rotational velocities, enabling the pursuit of mechanically efficient deliveries that maximize energy transfer while minimizing injury risk. However, the theoretically optimal form does not always align with an individual pitcher's physical characteristics, and one-size-fits-all coaching approaches have drawn criticism.
