Overview
The free agent system was introduced to NPB in 1993. Domestic FA rights are earned after 8 years on the first-team roster, and international FA after 9 years. Players who declare FA can negotiate with all teams, with the acquiring team providing compensation (player or monetary) to the former team. While FA significantly expanded player rights, concerns remain about talent concentration in wealthy teams and imbalances in the compensation system.
