Overview
The designated hitter rule allows a specialized batter to hit in place of the pitcher. In NPB, the Pacific League has used the DH since 1975, while the Central League has not adopted it. The presence or absence of the DH creates significant tactical differences between leagues. The Pacific League benefits from deeper lineups, while the Central League adds strategic elements through pitcher at-bats and pinch-hitting decisions. In interleague play and the Climax Series, the home team's rules apply.
