NPB Golden Glove Award Lineage - The Artistry of Defensive Masters

Golden Glove History

Established in 1972 as the Mitsui Golden Glove Award, the honor recognizes nine defensive standouts per league annually. Selected by reporter vote considering defensive skill, games played, and fielding percentage, it has served as NPB's highest defensive honor for over 50 years.

All-Time Defensive Masters

Tsuyoshi Shinjo won 10 outfield awards with his range and arm. Ichiro earned 7 with his legendary laser throws. Shinya Miyamoto won 10 at shortstop as the 'defensive textbook,' and Atsuya Furuta won 10 as catcher with his arm and game-calling.

Modern Defensive Revolution

Ryosuke Kikuchi's 9 awards at second base featured acrobatic 'ninja' plays reaching balls beyond normal range. Sosuke Genda's 6 shortstop awards showcased range and throwing consistency. Both proved defense remains a decisive factor in winning games.

Evolving Metrics

Traditional fielding percentage has given way to UZR and DRS, which quantify range and play difficulty. These advanced metrics now influence Golden Glove voting, shifting recognition from error-free players to those with superior range. The quantification of defensive value has elevated appreciation for elite defenders.
