Camp Location Distribution and History
NPB spring training camps run approximately one month each February. Ten of 12 teams train in Okinawa or Miyazaki prefectures, leveraging warm climates. Nine teams camp in Okinawa and three in Miyazaki (some split between both). This concentration began in the 1960s, with the Giants pioneering Miyazaki camps. Nippon-Ham first held Okinawa camp in 1979, triggering rapid adoption. The pattern mirrors MLB spring training concentration in Florida and Arizona, driven by warm weather and facility infrastructure.
Economic Impact of Camps
Spring training economic impact is enormous for host regions. Okinawa Prefecture estimated 2024 camp-period economic impact at approximately 13 billion yen, encompassing lodging, dining, transportation, and tourism. Approximately 400,000 fans visit Okinawa camps annually, providing crucial February off-season tourism content. Miyazaki Prefecture estimates similar impact at 4-5 billion yen. Miyazaki City, hosting the Giants, sees hotel occupancy exceed 90% during camp with restaurant revenue increasing 1.5 times. SoftBank's camp at Miyazaki Ikime-no-Mori Sports Park draws over 10,000 daily fans.

Inter-Municipal Competition
Competition for camp hosting is fierce. Municipalities invest hundreds of millions to billions of yen in stadium renovations, new training facilities, and player accommodations. Nago City in Okinawa invested approximately 2 billion yen in complete stadium renovation to attract Nippon-Ham. Ginoza Village, Hanshin's Okinawa camp site, has roughly 6,000 residents but hosts more fans than its population during camp. For municipalities, camp hosting is an investment expecting economic returns. However, teams may relocate, creating investment recovery uncertainty. Rakuten partially moved camp from Kin Town to Kumejima in 2019, impacting Kin Town's economy.

Future and Challenges
The spring training environment is evolving. Climate change affecting February temperatures in Okinawa and Miyazaki impacts training conditions, while mainland early camps gain discussion. DeNA experimented with partial Yokohama camp implementation in 2024. Overseas camp revival also surfaces - teams once trained in Hawaii and Guam before cost-driven domestic return. Maximizing economic impact will deepen municipality-team partnerships through enhanced fan events, local business collaborations, and commercialized camp viewing tours. MLB spring training generates over 30 billion yen annually in economic impact, suggesting significant NPB growth potential.
