The posting system was established in 1998 between NPB and MLB. Alfonso Soriano of Hiroshima was the first player posted, signing with the New York Yankees.

Ichiro and Matsuzaka Moves
Ichiro posted from Orix to Seattle for $13.12 million in 2000. Daisuke Matsuzaka posted from Seibu to Boston for a record $51.11 million in 2006, dubbed Matsuzaka Money.
System Reform
In 2013, the posting system was reformed from blind bidding to a release fee based on contract value, capped at about $20 million. This gave smaller MLB teams a chance. Ohtani 2017 posting to the Angels fell under the international amateur rules.
